Adipose tissue is mostly composed of adipocytes and is the major form of energy storage for the body. The primary functions of these cells are to store triglycerides when there is an excessive supply of energy metabolites and to mobilize these reserves in case of starvation. Adipose tissue lipolysis is a fat destocking mechanism which causes the release of glycerol and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), both thus used as sources of energy by the other cells and tissues.
The purpose of this assay is to evaluate the stimulating effect of compounds (molecules, active ingredients, extracts, etc.) on lipolysis (slimming effect) by photometric determination of the rate of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) released by normal human hypodermic adipocytes (ex vivo).
