Adipose tissue is mostly composed of adipocytes and is the major form of energy storage for the body. The primary functions of these cells are to store triglycerides when there is an excessive supply of energy metabolites and to mobilize these reserves in case of starvation or caloric restriction.
Adipose tissue development (adipogenesis) can be caused by the increase of the size (hypertrophy by accumulation and storage of lipids) and also by the increase of the number of mature adipocytes (hyperplasia) via adipocyte differentiation.
The purpose of this assay is to evaluate, by image analysis and lipid content quantification (quantity of lipids stored as lipid droplets), the capacity of compounds (molecules, active ingredients, extracts, etc.) to inhibit the adipocyte differentiation process.
